If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train.

If + past perfectwould have + past participle
If I had studied moreI would have passed the exam.
If they had left earlierthey would have arrived on time.

If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.

I would have passed the exam if I had studied more.

I had studied, she had studied, we had studied, they had studied.

If I hadn’t forgotten my umbrella, I wouldn’t have got wet.

If we had booked earlier, we would have paid less.

Expresar arrepentimiento

If I had listened to you, I wouldn’t have made that mistake.

Analizar errores o decisiones

If he had checked the address, he wouldn’t have gone to the wrong place.

Explicar consecuencias

If the train hadn’t been delayed, we would have caught the connection.

Forma afirmativa

If she had left earlier, she would have arrived on time.

La condición utiliza had left y el resultado would have arrived.

Forma negativa

If she hadn’t left so late, she wouldn’t have missed the bus.

Forma interrogativa

What would you have done if you had missed the flight?

En las preguntas, would se coloca antes del sujeto y mantenemos have + participio:

Would you have gone if they had invited you?

Would have, could have y might have

Aunque would have + participio es la estructura más habitual, los Third conditional exercises PDF también pueden incluir could have y might have. Estos modales aportan matices diferentes.

FormaEjemploMatiz
would haveIf I had known, I would have called you.Resultado hipotético
could haveIf we had left earlier, we could have stopped for lunch.Capacidad o posibilidad
might haveIf he had trained more, he might have won.Resultado posible, pero menos seguro

Diferencia entre first, second y third conditional

ConditionalIdeaEjemplo
First conditionalPosibilidad futura realista. If I study, I will pass.
Second conditionalPresente o futuro hipotético. If I studied more, I would pass.
If I had studied more, I would have passed.

Usar would have después de if

Incorrecto: If I would have known, I would have called you.

Correcto: If I had known, I would have called you.

Olvidar have después de would

Incorrecto: She would passed the exam.

Correcto: She would have passed the exam.

Confundir past simple y past participle

Incorrecto: If we had went…

Correcto: If we had gone…

Utilizar el participio incorrecto tras would have

Incorrecto: We would have went.

Correcto: We would have gone.

Realidad: I left late, so I missed the train.

Condición alternativa: If I had left earlier…

Resultado alternativo: …I wouldn’t have missed the train.

Pensar primero en la relación entre causa y consecuencia ayuda mucho más que repetir automáticamente had + participio y would have + participio.

Una estructura avanzada: Had I known…

Had I known, I would have called you.

Su significado es exactamente el mismo que:

If I had known, I would have called you.

Después localiza la consecuencia y revisa si has usado correctamente will, otro modal o un imperativo.

6. They took a taxi and caught the flight.
7. You warned me, so I avoided the mistake.
8. We left early and avoided the worst traffic.

18. “If she had studied, she would passed.”
19. “If it hadn’t rained, we would have went to the beach.”
20. “Would you have went if they had invited you?”

Su estructura básica es if + past perfect, would have + past participle.

¿Cuál es la estructura del third conditional?

La forma más habitual es If + had + participio, would have + participio. Por ejemplo: If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.

El second conditional suele hablar de situaciones hipotéticas en el presente o en el futuro: If I had more time, I would travel. El third conditional imagina un pasado diferente: If I had had more time, I would have travelled.

¿Se puede usar would have después de if?

En la estructura básica del third conditional no. La cláusula introducida por if utiliza past perfect: If I had known…. El resultado utiliza would have + participio: …I would have called you.

¿Se pueden utilizar could have y might have?

Sí. Could have puede expresar capacidad o una posibilidad alternativa y might have indica un resultado posible pero menos seguro. Por ejemplo: If we had left earlier, we could have stopped for lunch.

Porque tanto el past perfect como would have, could have y might have necesitan participios.
