Estructura del first conditional

If + present simple, will + verbo baseIf you study, you will pass the exam.Si estudias, aprobarás el examen.
Will + verbo base + if + present simpleYou will pass the exam if you study.

Por eso decimos If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home y no If it will rain tomorrow….

Formas afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa

First conditional en afirmativa

La forma afirmativa sigue la estructura básica: If + present simple, will + verbo base. Ejemplos: If I finish early, I will call you; If they arrive on time, we will start at six.

First conditional en negativa

Ejemplos: If you do not hurry, you will miss the bus; If it rains, we will not go to the beach.

Preguntas con first conditional

Para preguntar por la consecuencia, podemos utilizar will al principio: Will you call me if you arrive late? También podemos formular preguntas con palabras interrogativas: What will you do if it rains? o Where will they stay if the hotel is full?.

First conditional con can, may, might e imperativo

Aunque will es la forma más conocida, la cláusula de resultado del first conditional puede utilizar otros verbos modales. Can expresa posibilidad o capacidad; may y might introducen un resultado menos seguro; y el imperativo permite dar una instrucción relacionada con la condición.

FormaEjemploUso
canIf you finish early, you can go home.Posibilidad o permiso
mayIf we leave late, we may miss the train.Posibilidad
mightIf it rains, the match might be cancelled.Posibilidad menos segura
imperativoIf Anna calls, tell her I am busy.Instrucción

Cómo utilizar unless

Unless suele equivaler a if not. Por ejemplo, Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus significa prácticamente lo mismo que If you do not hurry, you will miss the bus.

When, as soon as, before, after y until para hablar del futuro

Además de if, es frecuente encontrar expresiones temporales como when, as soon as, before, after y until. I will call you when I arrive; We will eat as soon as Dad gets home.

Diferencia entre zero conditional, first conditional y second conditional

TipoIdea principalEjemplo
Zero conditionalHechos generales, hábitos o resultados considerados siempre verdaderos. If you heat ice, it melts.
First conditionalSituación real o posible y resultado probable. If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
Second conditionalSituación hipotética, poco probable o imaginaria. If I had more time, I would travel more.

Usar will después de if

Incorrecto: If you will study, you will pass. Correcto: If you study, you will pass.

Con he, she o it, el present simple debe respetar la tercera persona: If she arrives early…, If he finishes…, If it rains….

Usar to después de will

Después de will utilizamos el verbo en forma base sin to: will go, will call, will study. Por tanto, will to go es incorrecto.

Crear una doble negación con unless

En frases como Unless you hurry, you will be late, unless ya contiene la idea de if you do not…. La construcción unless you do not hurry cambia o distorsiona el significado que normalmente queremos expresar.

Después localiza la consecuencia y revisa si has usado correctamente will, otro modal o un imperativo.

La estructura básica es If + present simple, will + verbo base.

Se usa present simple: If it rains, we will stay at home.

Por ejemplo: If you heat ice, it melts; frente a If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.

El first conditional presenta una situación posible o realista: If I have time, I will call you. El second conditional plantea una situación hipotética, improbable o imaginaria: If I had more time, I would travel more.

Unless significa normalmente if not. Por eso, Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus equivale a If you do not hurry, you will miss the bus.

If you study, you will pass the exam y You will pass the exam if you study expresan la misma relación.
